Mumbai's humidity and long monsoon are tough on interiors. A few informed choices at the design stage prevent swelling, fungus and peeling finishes later.
1. Use BWP ply where water is likely
Boiling Water Proof (BWP) grade plywood costs more than MR grade, but it is the safer choice for kitchens, bathroom vanities and any cabinet on an external wall.
2. Keep carcasses off the floor
Wardrobes and kitchen units raised on legs or a sealed plinth avoid absorbing moisture from wet mopping and seepage.
3. Laminate both faces
Balancing laminate on the inner face of shutters stops them from warping as humidity changes through the year.
4. Choose hardware for coastal air
Stainless steel (SS 304) hinges, channels and handles resist the corrosion that salty air causes in cheaper fittings.
5. Plan ventilation into the design
Louvred shutters, ventilated wardrobes and a small gap behind wall panelling let air move and stop musty smells.
